Overview of Projects

The Bluff Fort Site
Since 1996, the Foundation has been acquiring and developing the site of the original Buff Fort in the center of Bluff, Utah. The site is open year round for self-guided tours. Additional development plans include a visitor’s center, additional log cabins, a blacksmith shop and pioneer artifacts such as covered wagons and additional interpretive displays.

Internet Web Page
Enhancement plans include online trail guides, as well as a historical archive where histories, stories, pioneer profiles and photos can be posted. An online store will also be added where relevant books, art, music and videos will be sold. The proceeds will be used to help support the foundation’s projects.

The Hole-in-the-Rock Trail
This is a National Historic Trail. With a memorandum of understanding between the BLM, Park Service and the Hole-in-the-Rock Foundation, a unified marking scheme was agreed upon and marking and interpretive projects carried out. Current marking is being done by the Foundation, The Escalante Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail Marking Committee in Blanding, Utah. The foundation provides funds and trail expertise for the marking organizations. TheFoundation develops and installs interpretive signs on the trail in cooperation with the BLM.

To continue to showcase this amazing pioneer trail, the foundation is pursing the following:

1. Develop maps accessible on the internet and via hard copy. We will also develop collateral materials available for other visitor information sites.
2. Continue to work with federal, state and local agencies in the development and placement of interpretive signs along the trail.
3. With the approval of appropriate government agencies, develop roadside turnouts and kiosks at key intersections of the trail and state highways. These kiosks will include information such as the area’s geology, historical significance, culture, and environment.
